UFC 264: What Is Next For Dustin Poirier If He Loses?

UFC 264 plays a pivotal role in what the lightweight division will look like. If Dustin Poirier wins, immediate title shot, but what if he loses? This is a tough question to answer without knowing how the fight will go.

What If Poirier Loses In A Close Decision?

If Dustin loses a close decision, his future looks different than if he gets dominated for 5 rounds. If he loses a close decision, I would not be shocked if he fights another top contender for the next title shot before year’s end. I would predict that he will fight either Justin Gaethje or Beneil Dariush if he loses this fight by a close decision. One fighter that I think gives him a great fight is Beneil Dariush. Dariush, who has risen quickly up the ranks in the division, is primed for a title eliminator and has not scheduled his next fight yet. He showed just how dominant he could be in his last fight at UFC 262. With great striking and wrestling, Dariush could give Poirier a real run for his money if they square off.

What If Poirier Gets Dominated The Whole Fight?

If he gets dominated by McGregor for the entire fight, I will assume he would have to fight at least two more times before getting a title shot. In that case, I could see him fighting anyone inside the top 5 of the lightweight division. One fighter who I think would give Poirier a tremendous fight is Michael Chandler. They have similar styles, and both push the pace every round. I think regardless of who wins that fight, they would also have to fight a top 3 contender in their next fight to get to the title.

Tune in Saturday night to see who wins the trilogy fight and keep an eye on any Dustin Poirier news if he loses the fight.
