Tyrese Maxey wins 2023-24 NBA Most Improved Player award

Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey will be taking home some hardware, winning the 2023-24 Kia Most Improved Player award, the league announced Tuesday.

He edged out Chicago’s Coby White and Houston’s Alperen Sengun–the two finalists–for the award. According to the voting results, Maxey earned 51 first-place finishes while White and Sengun had 32 and eight first-place votes, respectively.

Though White had more total votes (91) than Maxey (79), despite finishing behind him in the vote. Thus, if White would have recorded more second- and third-place finishes, he would be walking home with the award, not the 76ers’ fourth-year guard. White finished with 43 second-place votes and 16 third-place votes.

The other players–outside of the three finalists–who earned first-place votes were Oklahoma City’s Jalen Williams (5), New York’s Jalen Brunson (3), Washington’s Deni Avdija (1) and Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton (1). A total of 13 players received votes.

Maxey, 23, is the second 76ers player in franchise history to win the Most Improved Player award–the other being Dana Barros (1994-95). He averaged 25.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game this season, shooting 45.0 percent from the floor, 37.3 percent from 3-point range and 86.8 percent from the charity stripe.

The former No. 21 pick has received a usage uptick in all but one of his four seasons, elevating to 28.0 percent in 2023-24 as the lead ballhandler without James Harden manning the ship.

On a per-100-possession basis, Maxey raised his scoring from 29.9 points to 34.9 points, while his assists bumped by nearly three (5.2 to 8.1). He had 22 30-point performances, including eight 35-point, four 40-point games and three 50-point performances. Those were the only other 50-point games of his career.

Do you think Maxey deserved the award? Let us know in the comments!
