The Patriots found themselves a gem with Christian Gonzalez. If you read our NFL Draft profiles, you knew that part already. Gonzalez is a stud and I actually gave the Patriots a high draft grade for the first time in what seems like forever.
Two weeks through Gonzalez’s rookie season and he already has Tyreek Hill’s approval. That’s not small feat. Hill just bashed the fans in New England as can be seen in the embed so he’s been looking to take shots at them. There will be no negative ricochet cheese, however, for Gonzalez.
“I was able to go against the rookie,” Hill said on the “It Needed To Be Said” podcast. “He’s real good. A very lengthy corner. He had some real good speed and technique about him.”
Thus far the Patriots have held their two opponents (Philadelphia & Miami) to 24.5 points per game. That number would be a lot worse if Gonzalez wasn’t on the team. Hill notched five catches for 40 yards in the win over New England. Compare that to the week before when Hill went for 215 yards and two scores against the Chargers. Coaching obviously has something to do with that but Gonzalez is really good. Hill has no reason to blow smoke.
The Oregon product also notched his first interception this past week.
The crazy part is the Patriots traded down and still got Gonzalez. Belichick found a way to screw the Jets allowing the Steelers to trade up for Broderick Jones and still got Gonzalez. Maybe Belichick didn’t totally lose his fastball? The guy still knows the secondary really well. Always has.
