The Toronto Blue Jays have won the José Berríos sweepstakes. Berríos was the top starting pitcher on the market after Max Scherzer was dealt to the Dodgers. Toronto is behind in the wildcard race but Berríos is controllable for next season.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was the first to report the news:
There were a number of teams involved in the José Berríos sweepstakes including a number of AL East teams. Boston was thought to be a possible landing spot. Toronto is clearly going for it. The Jays have hit the most homers in the game. Pitching has really been the problem. Berríos is a top flight starter to go with Hyun-jin Ryu and Robbie Ray.
The Twins are getting a monster return for their home grown starter. Simeon Woods-Richardson was part of the Marcus Stroman deal. He is the Jays number four pitching prospect. The real headliner here is Austin Martin who was the 5th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft out of Vanderbilt. Martin is the 16th ranked prospect in the entire sport. You want to talk about a monster return? This is it.
Toronto is currently 9.5 games out of the AL East and 4.5 out of the second wildcard. The Jays obviously feel they can make their way back into the race with this deal.
