It Turns Out Brainer Bonaci Is A Scumbag

The Red Sox farm system took a hit. No, I was not mentioning the firing of Chaim Bloom. Technically this was a prospect that was acquired during the Dave Dombrowski era. It turns out that Brainer Bonaci is a scumbag. Boy oh boy did Bonaci screw up…

The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier (don’t click it’s behind a paywall) has reported that Bonaci is being placed on the restricted list. Apparently, Bonaci is being placed on the list for violating the minor league Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.

Both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline ranked him as the 11th-ranked prospect in the system. Bonaci signed with Boston out of Venezuela in July 2018. Bonaci, 21, slashed .297 with a .354 on-base percentage, .464 slugging percentage, .818 OPS, 11 homers, 18 doubles, one triple, 44 runs, 45 RBIs, 30 walks, 80 strikeouts and seven stolen bases in 2023. That was in 79 games with High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland.

To mention this from a team perspective, there are positives here. Bonaci was Rule 5 eligible this Winter. He would have been a player the Sox debated putting on the 40-man roster. That, obviously, is no longer the case. Also, if there is one spot where Boston is strong in the farm system, it’s middle infielders. The Sox will be able to overcome this loss. It just sucks “losing” a semi-heralded prospect for nonsense.

These charges feel pretty serious. It wouldn’t be surprising if this is the last we hear of Bonaci.
