It’s a story that seems to becoming too common in professional sports. As sports betting becomes more normalized, accepted, and partnered with, gambling scandals involving players are cropping up alongside. San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano is the latest professional athlete to be implicated in such accusations and could be facing a lifetime ban from the MLB as a result.
Tucupita Marcano’s story bares some striking similarities to a recent scandal in the NBA involving Jontay Porter. In the cases of Marcano and Porter, both players made bets on teams they played for, while they were playing for them. Coincidentally (or not), both players made bets on their teams while they were injured. According to Jeff Passan, Marcano allegedly bet on the Pittsburgh Pirates as a member of the team last season. The bets were supposedly made while Marcano was rehabbing a torn ACL. The MLB rules are very clear on this issue: if Marcano is found guilty, he will be banned for life.
It goes without saying that this is an ugly look for the MLB. This isn’t even the first major gambling scandal the league has faced this season. Most casual baseball fans are probably aware of the scandal involving Shohei Ohtani‘s longtime friend and interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, who is facing criminal charges for embezzling millions from the Los Angeles Dodgers star to settle gambling debts. Unfortunately for the MLB, gambling scandals seem to run in their blood (need I remind anyone of Pete Rose or the Black Sox). Furthering the misfortune, it’s hard to see an end in sight for these kinds of stories. Partnerships between professional organizations and sportsbooks are only getting stronger, and gambling is becoming easier. Hopefully, MLB can make it to the end of the season before another one breaks.
