Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas suffered a torn left patellar tendon Friday and will likely miss the rest of the season, team president Craig Breslow said this weekend.
He officially underwent surgery on Sunday, the team announced.
Casas got injured in the second inning Friday against Minnesota trying to beat out a dribbler down the first base line. Right before he stepped on first base, his left knee buckled and tripped over Ty France‘s foot upon crossing. He was stretchered off the field after.
This is a devastating blow for Boston, even though the team has struggled to generate production from first base this season.
Casas, 25, was struggling at the dish this season, slashing .182/.277/.303 with just three home runs and 11 RBIs through 29 games. Recall, he missed most of last season due to a rib injury, appearing in just 63 games with an .800 OPS.
Boston’s first basemen entered Sunday with the 18th-best wRC+ (82) and 19th-best fWAR. It’s been rough sledding. While Casas had a very rough start, replacing him may be even tougher. Will Romy Gonzalez be the full-time 1B? Could Rafael Devers return to the field as the 1B with Masataka Yoshida as the DH? Could Roman Anthony get 1B reps in the minors? Heck, could Yoshida receive 1B reps?
Those aren’t great options–with Devers at 1B and Yoshida at DH perhaps being the best for fielding the best team. Either way, they have to exhaust all options.
