Trey Sanders: Transfer Portal Success Story?

The transfer portal was built for guys like Trey Sanders. Here’s why it’s easy to root for the soon to be former Alabama running back. (Gary Cosby-USA TODAY Sports)

Trey Sanders: Transfer Portal Success Story?

Say whatever you want about the transfer portal. Talk about the pros and cons all you want. When it comes to Trey Sanders, the portal was just made for a guy like this. Alabama lost a lot of guys to the portal this past week including former top running back recruit, Sanders. The best thing about the new rules is that Sanders has a great chance to actually save his career and likely wouldn’t have been able to do so in the past.

I’m not sure if this is a like for like comp but once upon a time Jerome Ford was in a similar spot. No path to playing time at Alabama. Ends up transferring to Cincinnati and gets himself drafted. After all, increasing a player’s draft stock should be the goal here for anybody that transfers.

The only reason it’s not a perfect comp is because there is more hidden talent with Sanders. We just haven’t seen his full potential. A terrible car wreck has totally derailed Sanders’ career and I’m not sure we’re ever going to get to see the old version of him again. With the portal, we’re sure about to find out if that guy is still in there somewhere.

This is a guy that’s easy to root for and I’m sure Nick Saban will do everything in his power to get Sanders to the right situation. Given all that Sanders has been through, Saban will do the right thing and make sure Sanders is taken care of. He’ll call who he needs to in order to make it happen.

By the way, Sanders very well could wind up being a game-changer for someone by this time next year. It might partially be my fault. I drafted Sanders for my fantasy team and we know my team is just cursed. Is it much different from when Marcus Lattimore tore everything in his knee or when David Wilson broke his neck? For our sake, I just hope Sanders’ talent hasn’t been totally zapped by the car wreck. This is someone who was the number one running back recruit in the country, once upon a time.

Just keep an eye on it. Wherever Sanders goes, it will be a place where he gets a chance to carry the load and prove he’s a name to watch heading into the 2024 NFL Draft.
