The New Orleans Pelicans have signed forward Trey Murphy to a four-year, $112 million extension, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported Monday.
Murphy’s deal is hours before the rookie-scale extension deadline on Monday at 6 p.m. EST. He’s the fifth player to sign a rookie-scale extension–joining Cade Cunningham, Evan Mobley, Scottie Barnes and Franz Wagner, who all signed rookie-scale max deals.
Murphy’s extension will not kick in until next season. It will start at $25 million and increase by $2 million through the 2028-29 season. During the contract’s duration, Murphy will not account for more than 16.2 percent of the projected cap.
The fourth-year wing has quickly risen to one of the league’s better 3-and-D wings, and an important member of the Pelicans’ organization. He averaged 14.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists on 44.3 percent shooting and 38.0 percent from 3-point range (7.8 3PA). He won’t begin the season in the rotation due to a right hamstring injury, but his role is pretty defined in this top-heavy context.
Depending on how Murphy’s role changes, this extension could be a massive bargain–it’s dependent on myriad factors. Among the important ones is that star wing Brandon Ingram‘s in a contract year and doesn’t appear to be signing a new contract before the start of the season. If he leaves or is traded, there could be a positive ripple effect on Murphy, who’s a better fit next to Zion Williamson and Dejounte Murray long-term.
