The Saints were in salary cap hell entering the 2021 NFL offseason. There was just no way they were going to be able to bring back Trey Hendrickson. It didn’t take long for the emerging pass rusher to find a new home either. Hendrickson has signed a four year contract worth $60 million with the Bengals. Cincinnati will fork over $32 million of it coming in the first two years of the deal.
The news of the massive contract agreement was first reported by Ian Rapoport via NFL Network.
Hendrickson, 26, exploded during the 2020 season notching 13.5 sacks. The former Florida Atlantic product will not be easy to replace in New Orleans. The former middle round pick took some time to really get going but went nuclear in 2020. This is one of the best emerging pass rushers the league has to offer. Unless 2020 was somehow a fluke?
On a personal note, (I know these are news stories) but I’m happy for Hendrickson. Us Trey’s have to stick together. Plus, Hendrickson was a player I was fond of during the 2017 NFL Draft. Even dating back to the East-West Shrine game.
Hendrickson will now be the replacement in Cincinnati for the recently departed Carl Lawson. The Jets were able to scoop Lawson in free agency. Hendrickson is essentially the replacement for the Bengals. Time will tell if they made the right choice.
