Trey Burton Signs With Colts

A few days ago I said that it should be expected that Trey Burton signs soon and he did. The veteran tight end signed a 1-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts just a few days after being cut by the Bears. The deal is reported to be worth the minimum he is also getting $4 million guaranteed from Chicago, per Ian Rapoport.

Trey Burton signs looking for a fresh start in Indianapolis after a very disappointing year in Chicago. Burton’s 2019 season was tarnished by fallen production and injuries, leading to his release from the Bears. This signing comes with no surprise at all. The Colts lost tight end, Eric Ebron, to the Steelers in Free Agency. The Colts are going all in on Philip Rivers for the 2020 NFL season. The Colts have had a busy off-season and still have $23.9 million in cap space. This is a low-risk signing with a potential of a high payoff as we all know what Rivers can do with tight ends. Does Antonio Gates ring a bell? Burton joins a tight end room with Jack Doyle, Matt Lengel, Xavier Grimble, Mo Alie-Cox, and Billy Brown.

Now Burton is looking to become the second tight end behind Jack Doyle on Indy’s depth chart. Fortunately, Burton gets a fresh start in a new place with a familiar face, Frank Reich. Reich was Burton’s offensive coordinator during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles. The most memorable play of Burton and Reich’s time in Philadelphia came on the biggest stage, Super Bowl 52. Burton threw a touchdown pass to Nick Foles on fourth down for the infamous Philly Special. Reich did a great job of putting Burton in a prime position to succeed. Now Burton along with Reich and Colts fans are hoping that this 1-year deal is a low-risk move with a high payoff.
