Tre Johnson 2025 NBA Draft Profile

We are less than one week away from the 2025 NBA Draft! Today, we will be previewing Texas guard Tre Johnson, one of the best players in this year’s class! Let’s jump right into it!

Height: 6’4.75 (6’10.25 wingspan, 8’5 standing reach)

Weight: 190.4

Draft Age: 19.3

Position: Guard

As a five-star prospect out of Link Academy in Dallas, Texas, Johnson was a top-10 player in the 2024 recruiting class. He chose Texas over Baylor, Alabama, Kentucky, Illinois, Duke and Florida State, among others, according to 247sports.com. Johnson was one of the best freshman in the country, averaging an SEC-mosst 19.9 points, in addition to 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. He shot 42.7 percent from the floor with a true-shooting percentage of 55.7 percent. Let’s now dive a little deeper into his profile!

Strengths:

First off, Tre Johnson is an absolute bucket.

He is lethal, both in the mid-range and from 3-point range, where he drained 39.7 percent of his attempts. Few freshman have led the SEC in scoring–and Johnson’s one of them. That was the toughest conference in the country, and there were plenty of times, no matter what defenses threw at him, that he would drop 25-30-plus points with ease.

His mechanics and form are beautiful and incredibly repeatable; he’s got great footwork off screens and off-the-dribble; he knows how to contort his body and square himself with the rim regardless of where he’s at on the floor; Johnson has excellent lift–it feels like he’s never seen a hand in his face in his life.

Johnson will make any defense pay if you leave him open. He’s that special of a shooter. Every shot he shoots, I think it’s going in because all of them look pitch-perfect, even on stand-still 3s where he doesn’t get a ton of lift.

The 6-foot-6 guard was an underrated playmaker, especially in live-dribble situations when he’s getting downhill. He can either make smart, well-timed dump-off passes or kick-out passes to the perimeter. He’s not going to immediately be a player that your going to task with making consistent reads in ball-screens, but there are chops there that his 3.1 assist-mark doesn’t suggest; not all assists are created equal.

Weaknesses:

Where the weaknesses start for me with Tre Johnson are when he puts the ball on the deck. He has a strong tendancy to go right and I don’t necessarily love his off-hand dribbling or passing. He’s an excellent tough shot maker and has a very clean release from anywhere on the floor, but that part of his shot creation will be scouted pretty quickly.

Furthermore, I have concerns about his ability to generate consistent rim pressure. He has good-not-great accelaration and has a pretty low center of gravity, but he has a tendancy to rely too much on contested 2s. He’s a wirey strong athlete and I think some of his struggles getting to the rim was a byproduct of Texas’ middling spacing, but that’s one part of his game I want him to improve.

I always thought he was an underrated defender, rebounder and playmaker relative to public perception. However, there were times he did get lost on defense–especially off-ball. He has good-not-great instincts and isn’t super disruptive; I’m curious to see how much he is able to improve on that end because I think he absolutely can with more time.

Projection: Top-5 Pick

I have long been a fan of Johnson’s game and his perceived work ethic appears to be high. He’s an absolute bucket getter who can score from multiple levels and I don’t think his defense or playmaking are appreciated enough. I am glad he’s finally getting the consideration he deserves, and I’m glad Karl picked him No. 3 overall in our blogger draft. I ultimately don’t think he falls past 5, and if he does, if I am one of those other teams, I would be getting on the phone immediately.
