Just how good is Travis Hunter? Is the hype actually warranted? Well, that’s obviously what we’re here to talk about, so I’m just going to get to the point now. We have so much to talk about with this one, and somehow have to evaluate a real NFL prospect on BOTH sides of the ball. Here is your 2025 NFL Draft profile on the Colorado two-way star!
If you’re someone who enjoys these profiles, make sure to check out FanDuel Sportsbook so you can keep up with all the possible plays you can make heading into next season! Where Hunter goes certainly will have a ripple effect on things!
NFL Draft Stock Report: Week 2, Week 3, Week 5, Week 7, Week 8, Week 14, Alamo Bowl
Hunter, 21, was a five star recruit coming out of high school. Hunter wasn’t just a five star. He was also the number one rated overall player in the country during the 2022 cycle. For the record, Hunter was recruited as a corner, but he played both ways in high school. He also had a basketball background at a younger age.
This sure feels like Charles Woodson, except someone cranked up the human evolution meter about five notches. It’s hard to know where to start, other than the fact that I’m pretty sure this is an alien disguised as a human. I don’t use that alien word lightly. It’s hard to quantify how freaky this dude really is.
Let me start here. There is a lot of discussion on what role Hunter will actually play at the next level. I think it’s pretty obvious, and the only people questioning it are probably the same people who didn’t actually watch the games. This is a cornerback who should come in on obvious passing situations and win slot battles. Any other strategy here is the wrong one.
With Hunter, he essentially followed the Deion Sanders program, except he did it at maybe even a higher level. Offensively, he’s at a higher level than Deion. That’s for sure. Hunter spent one year at Jackson State and finished up the final two years with Colorado. It wasn’t hard to notice him as he had one of the best interceptions I’ve ever seen in my life against TCU to open the season last year.
No Combine performance for Hunter, but don’t believe his workout was even necessary. If you needed to see more of Hunter than what was shown during the year, I question if you’re blind. Ohtani, I mean Hunter, checked in at 6-foot, 188. He doesn’t have insane length and if you want to find a negative, it’s the game against Stanford when Elic Ayomanor beat him in a handful of contested catch situations. Outside of that, Hunter is about as rare a breed as you’re going to find.
Hunter has seven interceptions over the last two years and allowed an opposing passer rating of 39.9 in coverage in 2024. He didn’t go against a ton of NFL caliber receivers in the Big 12 last year but it’s still beyond impressive. The receiving production exploded this past year. In 2023, Hunter notched 57 receptions for 721 yards and five scores. That skyrocketed to 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns. It might be more impressive that he was the number one target on a team that already had three other quality targets who are in this same draft class.
The Heisman trophy was part of several accolades Hunter captured during his college career. It was well deserved based on the amount of snaps he was playing alone. Screw the stats. Screw the awards. It’s not even about that. It’s the skillset within the construct of the game that makes Hunter special. His ball skills as a corner are as good as it gets. He forced a game saving fumble against Baylor and is more than willing to tackle. His instincts at the position are just off the charts. The way he can just jump on routes and beat wide receivers to the spot is crazy.
As a receiver, he feels like a video game cheat code. It’s to the point where he knows what the DB is doing and even if he doesn’t make the catch, he baits opposing players into drawing penalties. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. The only way I can describe it is that it looks like Hunter is a dangerous hockey player who, because of his elite skill, draws a lot of penalties. No question he can run too, and is incredibly polished in his craft.
Travis Hunter is the best overall player in the class, and I don’t really think it’s close. This one really isn’t hard. Sometimes you just have to turn the card in for Ohtani. The team that gets their hands on Hunter should sleep very good at night while having full access to what feels like a hidden cheat code within the sport.
