The New Orleans Saints are signing five-time Pro Bowl offensive guard Trai Turner to a one-year deal, ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first to report Wednesday.
Turner, 30, was with the Commanders last season where he appeared in all 16 games and started in 12. While Turner isn’t the dominant force he once was, he was an imperative part of Washington’s rushing attack last season. In 2021, Turner started all 17 games for the Steelers and played in 92 percent of Pittsburgh’s offensive snaps.
Playing for New Orleans will also be a homecoming for Turner as he’s a Louisiana native.
He attended St. Augustine in Louisiana for high school and LSU from 2011-2013. At LSU Turner played in 25 games, started in 20, and earned Second Team All-SEC honors in 2013.
The Panthers drafted Turner No. 92 overall in the 2014 NFL Draft and his selection immediately paid dividends. He earned Pro Bowl honors in five consecutive seasons with the Panthers from 2015-2019.
After six successful seasons in Carolina, The Panthers traded Turner to the Chargers in exchange for Russell Okung in the 2020 offseason. In his sole season with Los Angeles, he started nine games.
The signing of Turner adds some much-needed depth and insurance on the interior of New Orleans’ line as every guard on New Orleans’ roster has dealt with recent injuries. Three-time Pro Bowler Andrus Peat has missed 26 games over the past four seasons and dealt with a myriad of injuries last season.
Starting guard Cesar Ruiz suffered a Lisfranc injury in Week 15 of last season. Rookie guard Nick Saldiveri also suffered a calf injury during the offseason that forced him to miss OTAs and he is currently listed on the PUP list.
