Trade Grades: Farabee & Frost To Calgary, Kuzmenko & Pelletier To Philadelphia

We’re now a few days removed from the multi-player trade between the Flames and Flyers. Chris Bagdonas and I sat down and chatted about the deal so the video you see below will be included in this trade grades post and the follow up fantasy hockey post. Enjoy the extra content. If you don’t care to watch it, feel free to comment on the trade grades.

Calgary Flames (acquire Joel Farabee & Morgan Frost)

Grade: A

I love this trade by the Flames. I don’t know how you don’t. The biggest flaw this team has is the fact that they can’t score goals. You’re adding two young guys who needed a change of scenery away from Torts who also have plenty of room to grow.

I’m a huge Joel Farabee fan. That guy has serious potential. We just haven’t seen the true boom moment yet but has showed plenty of those flash plays. Last season he had 50 points and seven of them came on the powerplay. Hard to do while playing with ineffective help in Philly.

Morgan Frost also has a really nice defensive stick and can become the long term third line center this team needs. He’s not the best offensive force but defense wise he’s a stud already.

The crazy part is both guys are under reasonable deals. Frost has RFA rights after being signed for $2.1 million this season. Farabee is under contract at $5 million for three more seasons after this one. A contract that will be viewed as a total bargain as the cap spikes.

The Flames also had plenty of cap space so eating both of these deals wasn’t even a problem. Not that they cost an arm and a leg anyway. Frost was the Flyers first round pick in 2017. Farabee the year after in 2018. You’re adding two first round talents who are young with room to grow for next to nothing.

It’s a win for Craig Conroy and it shows his room he’s trying to make the team better. This is how you start to create positive momentum in a Canadian market who can’t bring in free agents because of the tax rate as well. Job well done here.

Philadelphia Flyers: (acquire Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier, 2025 second round pick, 2028 7th round pick)

Grade: F

Horrible. Absolutely horrible. I HATE this deal for the Flyers. Clearly, John Tortorella has too much power here because two guys who were semi in the dog house minutes wise find themselves out the door for horrific value. Speaking of Torts… have they watched Kuzmenko check and play defense?

I can’t believe the Flames got real value for Kuzmenko. Thank god the Flyers needed someone who speaks Russian to help with Matvei Michkov because I have no idea who else wanted this guy. He’s legitimately the slowest skater in the league and can’t really do anything because move the puck around on the powerplay.

Kuzmenko has been a healthy scratch on every team that’s tried him. The Canucks thought he was unplayable. So did the Flames. The Flyers should have got a second rounder just for taking Kuzmenko on. That’s the truth.

Also, are the Flyers aware that Jakob Pelletier was on waivers to start the year? Any team could have claimed him. If the Flyers really wanted Pelletier… why not claim him?

To get two weird non-assets along with just a second round pick for Frost AND Farabee is clownshow behavior. I have a hard time believing anyone is actually defending this trade from the Flyers side of things.
