Tony Ferguson: ‘I Am Too Old To Retire’

UFC legend Tony Ferguson is 40 years old and has lost eight consecutive fights. The former UFC interim lightweight champion is not ready to retire, however. Ferguson believes he is too old for that.

Ferguson spoke about the idea of retiring retirement in a YouTube video with Demetrius Johnson. All quotes via TheScore MMA.

“I’m too old to retire,” Ferguson said. “I’m 40 years old. I’m halfway to 80. I’ve been competing since I was five years old in multiple sports.”

Frankly, I have no idea what Ferguson is attempting to say. That is why he is a fan-favorite. Ferguson is one of the most unique fighters to ever compete in the UFC. At the same time, that is a bit scary when it comes to retirement discussions.

The fact that Ferguson is uninterested in retirement is not a surprise. In his most recent UFC, it felt like the promotion was begging him to retire. In his octagon interview, he left one glove in the octagon and kept the other to signify that he was not committed to retirement. It has been less than three months and Ferguson is already talking about fighting again.

Ferguson is adamant that he is not fighting because he has to. Instead, he believes he can still compete with the best.

“It’s not like I don’t know anything else,” Ferguson said. “I do. (But) I’m still able to compete. When somebody can run a sprint faster than me, then maybe I’ll start to consider it.”

Ferguson already has his eyes on a potential return date. The 40-year-old is aiming for a return in the first quarter of 2025.

“We’re gonna probably take the rest of this season and figure some things out, and we’re coming back hard either January or February,” Ferguson said.

Time will tell if Ferguson will ever fight in the UFC again. After his UFC 296 loss, UFC CEO Dana White expressed he wanted Ferguson to retire. If he gets another fight, a year will have passed and he will have an additional loss on his resume. At some point, the UFC will stop offering Ferguson fights.
