Tomas Nido Designated For Assignment by Mets

Reports confirm catcher Tomas Nido has been designated for assignment by the New York Mets. Nido, age 30, has been with the Mets since his rookie year in 2017. He has seen generally limited playing time, and has mostly served as a backup or alternate. Nido saw his most use in 2022, where he hit .239 in 98 games for the Mets. He is slashing .229/.261/.261 through 32 games in 2024.

Tomas Nido’s release comes to make way for starting catcher Francisco Alvarez. Alvarez, 22, tore a ligament in his left thumb in a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 19 of this year. This injury required surgery, hence Alvarez’s several weeks long absence. Alvarez impressed the Mets during his rookie year, slashing 25 homers in 123 games for the team. The Mets hope that his return with bolster their offense and solidify a catching rotation that’s seen frequent turnover in previous seasons.

This isn’t Nido’s first time being DFA’d by the Mets, as he experienced a similar situation in 2023. He was cut from the team to make room for Omar Narvaez, who was ironically released by the Mets on June 5 of this year. Just like last season, I expect Nido will find somewhere to land. Though his offense is not stellar, he is a solid defensive glove. Teams lacking depth in their catching rotation will undoubtedly take notice of his eligibility.

Perhaps a nod in Nido’s favor, the Philadelphia Phillies announced today that their catching rotation is down a player. 3x All-Star and veteran J.T. Realmuto will be undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. The return time for a torn meniscus varies and depends on a lot of factors. Realmuto could be out for 3-6 weeks, or 3-6 months. I’m sure Nido hopes Philadelphia gives him a call.
