Tom Wilson is going nowhere Capitals fans. The Washington Capitals have locked up their hard-hitting forward for seven more years. Wilson will earn $45.5 million total with an average annual value of $6.5 million per season, the team announced Friday.
Last season, Wilson the 29-year-old posted 13 goals and 22 points in 33 games. The hard-hitting winger missed over half the season with a lower-body injury he sustained early in the season. Over the course of his career, Wilson has proved to not only be a big hitter but also to be a point getter. In 680 games played for Washington, Wilson has scored over 120 goals and reached 295 points.
Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian MacLellan spoke on the extension of the 6’4 winger.
“Tom possesses all the intangibles needed to win in this League and we are extremely pleased to sign him to a long-term contract, giving him the opportunity to finish his career in a Capitals’ uniform,” said MacLellan. “Throughout his career, Tom has improved every facet of his game through his drive and competitiveness. We feel his work ethic and leadership qualities will be a tremendous asset to our organization for years to come.”
Washington looks to get back on track next season. The Capitals missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014, snapping an eight-year playoff streak. Washington finished 12 points outside of the playoff race, finishing 13th in the eastern conference standings. Wilson and the Capitals finished the season two games under .500, placing 25th in league standings.
