Is It Time To Worry About RJ Barrett?

Rookies in the NBA are not put in a position to succeed. We ask 19 year olds to dominate a league full of grown men. Not really fair when you think about it. Rookies in the NBA are far less prepared to enter the league compared to the NFL. A lot of undrafted guys make roster in the NFL because they’re ready and grown men. Top 5 picks in the NBA are a coin flip at best to make it into real contributors.

Enter RJ Barrett who was the number one high school recruit in the country. Barrett was taken with the 3rd pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Zion Williamson hasn’t played yet but I’m not anybody is actually worried about him. Then there’s Ja Morant who is a walking highlight reel. RJ Barrett? He’s been a nobody.

Barrett hasn’t looked totally lost on the court, but he’s hasn’t been effective either. Barrett is shooting .393 percent from the floor and .329 from 3-point range. It would be one thing to be struggling to score. Barrett has been horrible from the 3-point line too. Shooting 60 percent at the free throw line is a major red flag.

The NBA has become a shooting league. Barrett’s comp coming into the league according to most experts was DeMar DeRozan. What has DeRozan won in the NBA? Even if Barrett becomes that, is that someone you can build your franchise around? At this rate, Barrett has a long way to go to even get to that level.

You have to be patient with young players in the NBA. Look at Brandin Ingram. He’s a superstar. Not many people expecting that coming into the season because people gave up on him. Right now, Barrett is not on the right path, but he still has a lot of time. Is it time to start worrying about RJ Barrett?

At this point, it’s early to say considering how much of a mess the Knicks are. This is a franchise that fired their head coach already this season. I’m not sure what RJ Barrett is? Can he be a playmaker? Why is he posting up so much?
