Reports from Adrian Wojnarowski confirm that the Minnesota Timberwolves and head coach Chris Finch have agreed to a four-year contract extension. Originally brought on in 2020, Finch was extended for the first time in 2022. He will remain the head coach in Minnesota through the 2027-2028 season.
Chris Finch has seen a wealth of success in his time as the head coach of the Timberwolves. His first season with the squad came in the pandemic-shortened 2020-2021 season. Finch and the Timberwolves only managed a 16-25 record during the chaotic 41 game season, but have been on a steady upward march since. Under Finch’s leadership, Minnesota improved to 46-36 and 42-40 in the next two seasons.
This year was undoubtedly Finch’s best season yet. He and the Timberwolves posted a 56-26 regular season record, their best since going 58-24 in 2003-2004. The Timberwolves defeated the reigning MVP and champion Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets in a thrilling seven-game series this year, before succumbing to the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference Finals.
Finch has done an excellent job managing and developing the elite talent in Minnesota. The once-dubious pairing of Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns has surpassed most expectations. Gobert received yet another DPOY award this season, and KAT made his fourth All-Star team. During Finch’s tenure, the Timberwolves both drafted and grew Anthony Edwards into a two-time All-Star and budding superstar. At present, the sky seems to be the limit for Finch and the Wolves.
