Former Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson has signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the Miami Marlins, ESPN’s White Sox beat writer Jesse Rogers was first to report Thursday.
Anderson, 30, is easily coming off the worst season of his career. He hit .245/.286/.296 — a career-low .582 OPS (60 OPS+) — hitting just one home run and 25 RBIs with 13 stolen bases in 123 games. Over his previous four seasons, the middle infielder slashed .318/.347/.474 with 51 home runs, 163 RBIs and 53 stolen bases in 374 career games.
Anderson’s a two-time All-Star, a one-time Silver Slugger and finished seventh in the American League MVP voting in the COVID-shortened 2020 season. He was also MLB’s batting champion in 2019 with a .335 batting average (leading to an. 865 OPS, 128 OPS+) across 123 games.
Drafted No. 17 overall in the 2013 draft, he’s spent his entire MLB career in the White Sox organization up to this point. This could be a very beneficial buy-low option for the Marlins, who could opt to trade Anderson at the August trade deadline if they’re not in contention.
Marlins top infield prospect Jacob Amaya, who had a cup of coffee in MLB last year (nine plate appearances), could be up full-time by the end of 2024. Anderson’s not the fullest bill of health, so he could potentially see some playing time at shortstop (or second base) in the case of any injury.
