Reports confirm former All-Star and American League batting champ Tim Anderson was designated for assignment by the Miami Marlins today. Anderson, 31, was roughly halfway through a single year deal he signed with the ball club earlier this year.
Tim Anderson began his MLB career as a member of the Chicago White Sox in 2016. Aged 23 at the time, Anderson made a good impression on the league, batting .283 in 99 games for the north side team. He continued to put out average to decent numbers for a few years, finally busting out in 2019. He won the American League batting crown that year, batting .335 and a .865 OPS. Anderson would continue to bat .300 or better for the next three seasons, as well as earning All-Star game selections in 2021 and 2022.
Tim Anderson’s production began to decline in 2023. His batting average dropped 60 points from the season before (.301 to .245), his OPS falling to a then career low of .582. Anderson left the White Sox as a free agent and signed with the Marlins in February of 2024. Unfortunately for both Anderson and the Marlins, his numbers slumped further. After 65 games with the Florida squad, his 2024 batting average sits at a lowly .214. His OPS is a miserable .463.
Anderson will have to work hard to convince a team he can recover his batting average, as it is his main draw. He is not a power hitter. He can not make up for a low average with home runs in the same way that Kyle Schwarber might, for example. In the meantime, infielder Xavier Edwards will be taking Anderson’s spot on the roster.
