2K Sports has just announced that they have agreed to a long-term deal with Tiger Woods, who is arguably the greatest golfer of all time. Previously, Woods was perenially on the cover of EA Sports’ version of the PGA Tour video games. His face was on the cover of those games from 1999 until 2013 when the company ended its relationship with Woods and started a new one with Rory McIlroy. McIlroy’s games did not fare nearly as well among fans, as the franchise ended in 2015.
Last year, 2K picked up a deal with the PGA Tour and Woods’ fellow PGA Tour buddy Justin Thomas was on the cover. The game was a commercial success and fans have been clamoring for another one. Sure enough, 2K came through and came back better than ever after they announced an exclusive deal with Tiger. Woods had this to say about his newly-inked deal with the video game developer:
“I am looking forward to making my return to the video game landscape, and with 2K and HB Studios, I’ve found the right partners to make it happen. I’m honored to take part in this opportunity and look forward to sharing my expertise and insights as we build the future of golf video games together.”
The partnership with Woods gives 2K the rights of his name and likeness to appear in any 2K game in the future, and any other products released in the future. Woods will serve as 2K’s Executive Director and consultant. 2K will also be partnering with Woods’ TGR Foundation, which provides STEM curricula and college-access programs to underprivileged students. Here’s what 2K said:
“In golf, there is no bigger icon than Tiger Woods. Like the rest of the world, we were saddened to hear of his recent accident, and we wish him a full and smooth recovery,” said President at 2K, David Ismailer, “We have been eager to announce our partnership with Tiger, whose legendary career has transcended the sport. We are thrilled to have him join our PGA TOUR 2K series as an Executive Director.”
Everyone in the world is currently rooting for Tiger Woods and his family for him to make a healthy and speedy recovery after his devastating car accident which occurred nearly two weeks ago, including 2K. This new deal with 2K just shows how big of a figure and influencer Tiger is in the world of golf, and the profound effect he has on anything his name is attached to. If there is anyone that is going to revive the life of a golf-based video game and make it as realistic as possible, it’s Tiger Woods.
