Theo Epstein Joins Fenway Sports Group

First reported by Sportico, former Red Sox General Manager Theo Epstein is joining the Fenway Sports Group as part-owner and special advisor to the organization. Joining FSG means Epstein will be involved in all of their holdings, which includes Liverpool FC, the Pittsburgh Penguins, RFK Racing, TGL’s Boston Common Golf, the newly acquired stake in the PGA Tour, and of course the Red Sox.

Many may ask; what does this mean for the baseball side of this? Epstein suggested he would serve as a “sounding board” and “executive coach” as needed when speaking with Sportico.

“I’m a full believer in him and what he and his team are going to mean for the Red Sox,” Epstein said regarding Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, who was afforded a strong recommendation from Epstein after the 2023 season. “With the other sports, where I have a lot to learn, hopefully, my experience not only with teams but with Major League Baseball and with private equity will come in handy, at least as a supportive resource for the people at FSG.”

What affects the Red Sox?

While, at first glance, Red Sox fans may perceive this as groundbreaking, it’s essential to pump the brakes. Despite Epstein’s involvement with FSG, the on-field product may not experience a significant impact. Even though having him back will mean a good voice in the meeting room. Epstein’s responsibility will most likely stem far more than just the Red Sox. As deals have yet to materialize, the Red Sox are heading into 2024 far from posing a threat to the AL East.

It’s great to see Epstein move up in the world. Beloved in Boston for helping build the 2004 World Champion Red Sox team. In 2011, heading the Chicago Cubs, aiding that franchise to win their first title in over a century. Now entering ownership of a team he knows very well no less.

Many may be optimistic about what this means for the Red Sox, but in short not much most likely. Things can change in an instant, so let’s see what it means moving forward.
