The Ultimate Fighter 29 Episode 2: Everything You Missed!

The Ultimate Fighter 29 was back for Episode 2 on Tuesday. Here is what you missed!

Mitch Raposo and Liudvik Sholinian

The second fight of the season was Mitch Raposo against Liudvik Sholinian in the bantamweight division, and the backstories in this episode were excellent. We learned about Raposo’s life and introduction into MMA as well as learning about Sholinian’s professional career and the obstacles he has faced in his time in MMA.

This episode gave us a glimpse into the training of the fighters and their preparation for the fight, including their one-on-one training with their respective coaches. Brian Ortega mentioned the difficulty in training Sholinian due to the language barrier, but it was inspiring to watch Ortega communicate using his movements to cross the language divide.

The Fight

The fight was expected to be a battle and it lived up to the hype. Sholinian is an elite wrestler and Raposo is more of a striker, but the contrast between the two created a great match-up. Raposo was tagging Sholinian with shots from start to finish of the first round. Feinting and shooting a hard left or a smooth right, Raposo was finding his target with regularity, but as the second round began, Sholinian utilized his wrestling to get Raposo to the ground. He maintained ground control for most of the second round, forcing the judges to score the fight a draw and requiring that a third round be fought. Sholinian dominated the third round and claimed victory in the end, getting Raposo down and securing ground control for most of the round.

We also know that the third fight of the season will be Ryder Newman and Tresean Gore in a middleweight bout. This fight again pits a wrestler in Newman against a striker in Gore. Tune in next Tuesday to see who secures a spot in the semifinals.
