Sports Media
The Athletic continues to succeed in its pursuit of killing the newspaper industry. They’re just doing it this time as a rat on the inside and are no longer trying to do it intentionally anymore. It’s really comedy central except the sports media version, but far less entertaining. Comedy as in watching a horrific car crash that you can’t take your eyes off of.
Even after the New York Times closed its sports section, The Athletic is continuing to operate at a loss.
An interesting article from Front Office Sports dropped that details the company from a financial standpoint. The Athletic has improved their financial standing but mostly because customers have simply combined their subscription package from what used to be the sports section of the New York Times.
“The Athletic is making increased strides toward profitability — but continues to create organizational turmoil for its parent company, The New York Times.”
“The Times said Tuesday that The Athletic’s adjusted operating losses during the second quarter shrank to $7.8 million from $12.6 million year-over-year, and from a loss of $11.3 million in 2023’s first quarter.”
“The improved financial performance was due in part to a 55.3% rise in revenue to $30.4 million, as the Times achieved additional traction among consumers with its bundle subscription offer combining the newspaper and The Athletic. More than 3.6 million subscribers can access The Athletic either through the bundle or a standalone subscription, up from 3.3 million in the first quarter and 1.7 million a year ago.”
The great con job of sports media. That’s all The Athletic continues to be. Still operating at a serious loss even after the NYT closed its sports section. Front Office Sports also notes that The Athletic has never turned a profit in the history of its company. Also, the post includes several paragraphs detailing staffers from the NYT causing chaos inside the building over the deal. It’s getting uglier by the day.
It’s only a matter of time before this sinking ship goes under. They are a piss poor product and continues to be part of the problem in the sports media field.
Why would you pay for The Athletic when you can get superior content here for free? More and more people figure that out every day. Just a matter of time before that place officially tanks for good.
