Texans Fire OC Bobby Slowik

Bobby Slowik was a hot head coaching candidate just one year ago. Now he’s out of a job. After a downward trajectory by CJ Stroud, the Houston Texans are in the need for a new offensive coordinator. Slowik is out after just two seasons in Houston.

VIA NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport:

“The Texans are moving on from the offensive coordinator, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday. Offensive line coach Chris Strausser is also out in Houston, per Rapoport.”

This news shouldn’t be viewed as overly surprising. CJ Stroud regressed in his second season and a lot of it had to do with it. In every single category – yards, completion percentage, touchdowns, picks, QBR… all got worse from his rookie season.

I’m not an X’s and O’s guy but it was pretty obvious watching the Texans this year that they never really diversified the offensive portfolio from Stroud’s rookie season. Never any added new wrinkles and teams started adjusting to what they were doing. The problem is Slowik never really adapted and Houston took a step back because of it.

Offensive line coach Chris Strausser also lost his job. In fairness to him, the guy didn’t have a lot to work with beyond an aging Laremy Tunsil. Houston needs to upgrade that line in the worst way, which also had something to do with the regression.

This part is TBD but Jerrod Johnson getting a promotion feels like a strong possibility here. He’s the QB coach and could be promoted into this role.
