Teresa Weatherspoon Should Be The First Female Head Coach In The NBA

Teresa Weatherspoon is a “serious candidate” to replace former Pelican Head Coach Stan Van Gundy. The current assistant coach in New Orleans has received consistent praise from the players, including star forward Zion Williamson. The praise is well deserved, as Weatherspoon’s career in the WNBA and beyond is one of the best in history. After an impressive career playing for the Liberty and Sparks, she took over the head coach position at Louisiana Tech and was admitted to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.

Weatherspoon is more than qualified to take over the coaching position in New Orleans given her extensive basketball experience and knowledge. She is currently one of seven women in coaching positions in the NBA, the list also including the beloved Becky Hammon in San Antonio, but Weatherspoon would be the first female head coach in the NBA if she landed the job.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, many candidates are under consideration for the New Orleans head coaching job. Jason Kidd from the Lakers and Charles Lee from the Bucks are up for the position, but Weatherspoon is a much better fit. She has built irreplicable relationships with the players, especially the young stars like Williamson and Brandon Ingram, and the entire team trusts and respects her basketball expertise.

Weatherspoon will have her hands full if she gets the job, as she would inherit a Pelicans team that finished 31-41 last season, but Weatherspoon has the experience and ability to take this team to the next level and she is an ideal choice to be the first female head coach in NBA history.
