Through the first slate of games Tuesday night, there were enough technicals to go around.
On a night that featured only four total games, things sure got interesting, and fast. The Nets lost to the Spurs 106-98, and the Bucks managed to pull off a win against the Raptors 130-122. Both games saw some solid individual performances, with Ben Simmons dropped his first triple-double as a Net and a scoring battle between Jrue Holiday and Fred VanVleet, with both players dropping over 35 points apiece.
These were nothing, however, compared to the beauty that was the fights that managed to break out during both contests.
Technicals flew around in both the early and later games — some were necessary, and others were just part of the game. Here are the reports for what happened on Jan. 17.
First up, we have the brief scuffle between Nets forward Markieff Morris and Spurs rookie Jeremy Sochan.
While definitely the lighter of the two, there’s no doubt that things got intense between both teams as Morris and Sochan pulled each other to the ground.
I will say, it was nice to see Sochan’s teammates, like Zach Collins, step up and help the smaller Sochan out. Still, Morris is known to have a bit of a temper as well, so things definitely could have escalated further. Morris was also the only one to receive a technical for this outburst.
Next up on the card is Brook Lopez against Gary Trent Jr.‘s headband.
This was easily the worse of the two brawls for tonight’s games. Lopez, who entered the fight with a technical from an earlier 3-second violation, for some reason, decided that his biggest concern here was going to be a headband. Right.
Again, it’s great to see teammates helping each other out in these situations. OG Anunoby stepped up big time for his shooting guard, receiving a technical in the process. Lopez would in turn receive two more technicals for his efforts, leading to his ejection from the game.
As for the later two games, these being the Nuggets’ win over the Blazers 122-113 and the 76ers’ 120-110 victory over the Clippers, there was certainly cleaner basketball being played. The former saw a 44-point effort from Damian Lillard and a 36-point triple-double for Nikola Jokić, while the latter gave us a 41-point performance from Joel Embiid and a decent 27-point outing for Kawhi Leonard.
The Blazers game saw Lillard and Chauncey Billups receive small technicals, while Aaron Gordon received one as well for the Nuggets. Bones Hyland was also assessed a technical for a defensive 3-second violation.
The 76ers game was even tamer. Montrezl Harrell and Embiid both received technicals for defensive 3-second violations. While certainly not the wildest of stories, they do add to the overall technical count for the 17th.
All in all, not a bad night for action with a small slate of games.
