Taysom Hill Gets 4 Year – $140 MILLION Dollar Extension – WHAT?

Taysom Hill just signed a contract extension for four years and $140 million dollars according to Adam Schefter, and I am perplexed at the sound of that.

Saints are restructuring QB Taysom Hill’s contract to create cap room. Details are great: it’s a 4-year, $140 million contract extension – but all years are voidable and it’s a mechanism to free up cap space this year, per source. It saves Saints over $7.5M against cap this year.

Drew Brees just announced his retirement, something that seemed inevitable after his last season with the Saints. Brees dealt with injuries last year and when he was unable to play, Taysom Hill was the guy to lead the offense in his absence.

The craziest thing about this new contract is that Hill is barely an NFL quarterback. He got most of his playing time as a wide receiver, wildcat back and on special teams.

In week 12 against the Broncos, Hill threw for 78 yards on 16 attempts and an interception with no touchdowns throw. He started four games in that stretch and the other games did not go as poorly. The numbers might not be as bad as I thought they would be, but I just remember watching this dude play and thinking he was lost.

When you think of top quarterbacks in the league, Hill’s name is no where close to the top of the list, yet he and Russell Wilson are both getting the same amount of money (kind of).

Yes, I know NFL contracts are very voidable and the numbers are always inflated for the player’s benefit. The Saints are in cap space hell and have been for a few years.

Most of his money for this year is coming in the form of a signing bonus, but if the other years are voidable, the deal might not be as bad as it appears. Whatever the case may be, Hill is going to be back on the roster for this year so Sean Payton will find a role for him on the field.
