The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the highest grossing video game movie ever

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has hit an astonishing new milestone, becoming the most financially successful video game movie of all time. The movie has now surpassed $500 million within a little over a week of release, beating out former record holder Warcraft and its $439 million, which had held the record for over six years.

The Secret to Mario’s Success

It’s no secret that animation studio Illumination has captured a large chunk of the animation market through the Despicable Me franchise and the ever-popular Minions, something that Nintendo used to their advantage when partnering with them for the Mario Movie. The partnership has clearly paid off, with the movie not only breaking the overall box office numbers, but the opening weekend numbers for a video game movie as well.

It also seems like this partnership will be continuing after the Mario Movie has had its time in theaters. If the movie’s post-credit scenes are any indication, Illumination and Nintendo will be embarking on future projects together, assuming nothing goes wrong.

A Nintendo Cinematic Universe?

So far Nintendo has had a very good run with the Mario Movie so far. So good in fact that talks are abound of a possible Nintendo cinematic universe. Whether or not this is plausible, or even that the company intends to do this, remains to be seen.

Time will tell if Nintendo sees a cinematic universe as something to chase after. But, for now, Nintendo and Illumination are taking stock. The Mario Movie isn’t even finished with its theatrical run and hasn’t even release in Japan yet, where, no doubt, crowds will be lining up to see this movie.
