After some buzz that five-star recruit Arch Manning could start under center for the Texas Longhorns this season, that speculation has been put to bed. Head coach Steve Sarkisian has come out and said that last year’s starting quarterback, Quinn Ewers, will remain the starter in 2023, according to 247Sports.
Ewers shined bright in Texas’ spring game. The redshirt sophomore quarterback helped lead the white team over the orange team. Ewers threw for 193 passing yards on 15-for-20 passing and one touchdown. Manning didn’t shine as bright as Ewers, but showed a glimpse of potential in the spring game. Manning seemed very comfortable in the pocket and showed off his athleticism in scrambles by creating time. He showed some serious velocity on his throws by zipping a short pass to Savion Red in a tight window.
“I think it’s pretty clear to say that Quinn’s our starting quarterback,” Sarkisian said following the Longhorns’ Orange-White spring game, via 247Sports. “And we feel very good about that.”
“I don’t ever want to take the stinger of these other guys that they’re not competing for something or that they’re not striving for something because they’re all talented players,” Sarkisian said of Murphy and Manning, via 247Sports. “They’re great teammates with one another, and I think they appreciate how hard each of them work. I think we’re in a very fortunate position to have three quality guys in that room that work the way that they do.”
Last season, Ewers brought back football in Texas once again, leading the Longhorns to an 8-5 record. Ewers threw for 15 touchdowns and only six interceptions in 10 games for the Longhorns. He added on with almost 2,200 passing yards and one rushing touchdown in his first year starting. Ewers brought Texas to the Valero Alamo Bowl last season and will look to avenge his loss this year as the Texas starting quarterback.
Manning’s time at Texas will come soon enough, but until then, Ewers has the bull by the horns.
