Steve Phillips Delivers Embarrassing Rafael Devers Trade Reaction

Former MLB GM Steve Phillips had a rough showing on social media last night, posting a reaction video to the Rafael Devers trade that missed the mark entirely. Instead of lambasting the Red Sox leadership, Phillips zeroed in on money, clubhouse chemistry, and vague intangibles. It’s the kind of old-school thinking that feels wildly out of place in today’s game—and shows just how out of touch he is with what actually matters in a blockbuster deal like this.

Take a look for yourself. It’s a shame that takes like these get traction:

In a clubhouse full of rising prospects and younger players, you need a steady hand. Look no further than one of the only remaining pieces from the 2018 superteam. If that’s not enough, simply what he meant to the city and fanbase should have counted for something. Instead, Craig Breslow decided to be a complete coward. They don’t shop him around for the best offer. He settles for an objectively bad return, even if they don’t have to pay any of his contract. Worst of all, Breslow does it right after a successful home stand, and he won’t have to face any home fans or media for three weeks. Just spineless stuff. If Steve Phillips agrees with his line of thinking then that should tell you everything you need to know.

Take a look at Kyle Harrison’s ERA this season and let me know how much he excites you. For the record, he’s already going back to AAA.

Bigger Picture Much?

The fact of the matter is that the Red Sox are operating like a small-market team until further notice. Failing to keep home grown stars happy and being scared of the luxury tax should be a sin in a city like Boston. Phillips is assuming that Breslow or FSG would spend big money and, even more importantly, spend it in a smart way. Even when Raffy ages into a DH, his salary is still very fair if you consider the market in today’s game. Giving a heart and soul guy away in the dead of night is as bad as it gets. Breslow better have a fortified suite at Fenway that he can hide in.

At the end of the day, Steve Phillips is reacting to a headline, not the full picture. His take ignores the context and the actual direction both franchises are heading. He decides to praise Craig Breslow and act like this had to happen. If he can’t see that, maybe it’s time to stop treating him like a voice of reason in today’s MLB landscape.
