Nearly three months after adding Blake Griffin, Dirk Nowitzki and Kevin Harlan to their NBA coverage ahead of next season, Amazon Prime is a pair of additional respected voices: Hall of Fame point guard Steve Nash and former longtime head coach Stan Van Gundy, NBA insider Marc Stein reported and The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand reported this week.
Nash hasn’t been involved with the NBA sphere since getting ousted by the Brooklyn Nets in November of 2022. Though he recently became LeBron James’ new co-host on the Mind The Game podcast and will take his mic to a different stage.
This will be the 51-year-old’s first television gig while Van Gundy, a current color commentator for TNT, has had multiple jobs in television. I think both are solid adds.
Nash has always been more of a timid, shy personality–though when you get him in an environment where it’s strictly basketball, he won’t be afraid to open up. I’m not sure if this opportunity takes him out of comfort zone, but I think it’s good for him regardless since he’s not going to pursue coaching any more. He’s got exceptional knowledge for the game and will almost certainly provided strong analysis if they allow him to talk about what’s happening on the court.
For Van Gundy, while it’s not official, one could assume he joins at least one of Kevin Harlan or Ian Eagle for play-by-play; he’s worked with both individuals for Turner, so this shouldn’t be any new adjustment if that’s the role he assumes.
According to Marchand, Amazon has “shown interest” in ESPN’s Richard Jefferson despite him being promoted to the No. 1 crew with Mike Breen and Doris Burke. Though Marchand does note that his contract with the network expires this summer. It would be tough for ESPN to lose four lead commentators (Jeff Van Gundy, Mark Jackson, JJ Redick) in three consecutive seasons, but business is business. It’s unclear whether or not Jefferson is considering a role elsewhere.
