Head coach Steve Kerr has agreed to a two-year, $35 million extension with the Golden State Warriors, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski first reported Friday. Kerr was in the final year of his current contract.
His contract extension will make him the highest-paid head coach (in terms of average annual value) in league history. That tops both Miami’s Erik Spoelstra, San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich, who makes more annually as the head coach and the Spurs’ president of basketball operations and Detroit’s Monty Williams; all three signed extensions ahead of or during this season.

Kerr — the four-time championship coach — is now committed to Warriors through the 2025-2026 season. San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich makes more money annually, but he has the title of president and coach.

Coach’s salaries don’t count against the team’s (impractical) tax bill, so Kerr’s extension won’t affect their cap situation entering next season. His extension will also align with superstar Stephen Curry’s years left on his current deal. Klay Thompson will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason while Draymond Green recently signed a four-year extension this offseason.
Kerr, who’s in his 10th season as head coach, has been there for Golden State’s entire dynasty run. He helped continue to elevate Curry, Thompson and Green into one of the league’s most deadly trios, leading them to six Western Conference titles and four NBA Titles in eight seasons. He’s also done an impressive job with their recent development of Jonathan Kuminga–even if their relationship has been, at times, rocky–and rookies Brandin Podziemski and Trayce Jackson-Davis this year. The Warriors have won nine of their last 11 games and are the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference.
He is 502-264 (.655) in his coaching career, recently becoming the fifth-fastest coach to reach the milestone–trailing Phil Jackson (682), Pat Riley (684), K.C. Jones (731) and Popovich (745). He and Al Attles (557)–the team’s head coach from 1970-83–are the only two coaches in franchise history to win at least 500 games.
