Buddy Hield has not yet been confirmed to be the Warriors’ 6th man, but after Sunday’s preseason contest against the Detroit Pistons, it has all but been confirmed. During the game, he played from that position and had success.
Hield has shot 40 percent from three throughout his career, which is perfect for the sixth-man position. Also, with the Warrior’s current roster, it’s the role he fits the best in. Golden State head coach Steve Kerr seems like he shares this sentiment.
“He looks the part, doesn’t he? He comes off the bench and you can feel his impact immediately,” Kerr said Sunday. “He’s not shy. We need that. We need a scorer off the bench, and he’s been fantastic his first four games. I’m real excited about Buddy. And that role makes a lot of sense for him.”
Throughout preseason, Hield has averaged 12.2 points and 16.5 minutes, shooting 60 percent from the field (18-30), including an efficient 59.1 percent from a distance. If he played 36 minutes a night, he would average 27 points per game.
Hield is expected to play 25-30 minutes a night and take over that sixth-man role that Klay Thompson was in last year. Let’s just say Thompson wasn’t thrilled about this, and it was a contributing factor to him leaving to play for the Dallas Mavericks this offseason.
Buddy Hield seems to be excited about his new role.
“You can’t rush it. You want it to be in the flow of the offense,” Hield said. “If you force it, the whole team gets out of whack. You want to let things come to you but still be aggressive. I feel I can do that.”
It will be interesting to see how Hield meshes with the team when the season officially starts for the Warriors on Wednesday, Oct. 23, in Portland against the Trail Blazers.
