For the record, this article applies to Cam Newton and Jameis Winston. If there’s one team that makes sense for Cam, it’s the Pittsburgh Steelers. Newton is still on the free agent market and really hasn’t generated much interest either. One way or another, Pittsburgh needs to sign another quarterback. Cam would be a great fit in Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh can’t go into next year with the current group of quarterbacks they have. Right now the depth chart reads Ben Roethlisberger, Mason Rudolph, Duck Hodges, Paxton Lynch, and JT Barrett. Mason Rudolph isn’t the guy and neither is Duck Hodges. We all know Lynch and Barrett are just camp and preseason bodies. Regardless of what the status of Big Ben is, the Steelers need a real back up quarterback.
The other thing that needs to be answered is the Ben Roethlisberger question. Do we really know what we’re getting with Big Ben next year? Roethlisberger missed essentially the entire 2019 season after blowing out his elbow. When Big Ben did play, he was AWFUL. 56.2%, 5.7 YPA, and 0-2 as a starter. It’s not like Big Ben is some spring chicken. What if he’s done?
The other thing to factor in in Pittsburgh isn’t even in position to draft their next guy. The Steelers have just one pick inside the top 100. No first round pick either. Do the Steelers really want to use their 2nd round pick on a quarterback with a win now team? I’m not buying it.
Cam Newton makes too much sense. Smashmouth football and a big body that matches with Roethlisberger brings to the table. The Steelers are taking too big of a risk to not address this position further. Ben Roethlisberger is 38 coming off elbow surgery. Cam Newton is the security blanket they need.
