Steelers Are Excited To See What Dwayne Haskins Can Do

Dwayne Haskins had a disappointing 2020 season as the quarterback of the Washington Football Team. He began the season as a starter and ended it on waivers. His former head coach, Ron Rivera, received a lot of hate for his decision to cut and bench Haskins, but the Football Team making the playoffs obviously means otherwise. Now Dwayne Haskins is with the Pittsburgh Steelers on a futures contract. Although the Washington Football Team did not have faith in Haskins, it appears that the Steelers have high hopes for the former 15th overall pick.

“We’re excited to see what Dwayne can do with us. It didn’t work out for him in Washington. We had high grades on Dwayne coming out of Ohio State. Of course, he got picked a lot higher than we were able to make that decision. It didn’t work. He’s a young, talented quarterback and we’re anxious to see what he can do once he gets in here and gets working with us.”

Steelers GM on Dwayne Haskins in Pittsburgh

The Steelers GM also made comments about some of Pittsburgh’s other quarterbacks as well, including future hall of famer Ben Roethlisberger. Ben Roethlisberger turns 39 in March. Currently, he carries a $41 million cap hit. By releasing him the Steelers could save $19 million in cap space. Which may become necessary with decreased salary cap due to the pandemic. The only other quarterback under contract besides Ben Roethlisberger is former Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph, who was praised by Pittsburgh Staff last season.

“Ben obviously is our quarterback. He did some really special things last year and we believe he can still do special things as we hopefully move into 2021. Of course, Ben is under contract. We have some salary cap implications, not only with him but a lot of players and potentially new players. We have to be aware of that. He has to be aware of that, as he is.”

The Pittsburgh Steelers will have to find a replacement for Ben Roethlisberger sooner rather than later. Everyone in the Steelers organization knows this. Now Dwayne Haskins is getting another shot to become a starter in the NFL.
