Dallas Stars Trade Mason Marchment To Seattle Kraken

The Dallas Stars traded forward Mason Marchment to the Kraken in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2025 fourth-rounder, the team announced Friday.

While Marchment brought grit and secondary scoring, the decision was less about performance and more about finances. With several key free agents due for new deals, Dallas is tightening its budget to keep the core intact. It’s a classic case of giving up now to secure the future. Jim Nill knows how pivotal this offseason is. With that, almost anyone could see the former Panther looked like a cap casualty in the flesh.

The Ontario native just turned 30-years-old yesterday. One of his presents is now a change of scenery.

Splash In The PNW?

Lots of contending teams have a need to move money this Summer. With a rising cap, having the chance to offload excess salary and reshape your team is a very enticing proposition.

Thankfully for Dallas, Marchment is not a bad player and a $4.5 million cap his is not impossible to move off of. The 6-foot-5 winger scored 22 goals and 47 points last season and is known for his physicality and net front presence. A third and fourth rounder is not a terrible price to pay for a strong middle six winger, especially if your roster needs scoring as bad as Seattle does.

In 2024-25, the Kraken were smack dab in the middle of the NHL for goalscoring. With only four 20-goal scorers, adding some finishers was a must. While head coach Lane Lambert also needs to find a way to develop the young talent on the main roster, having some more firepower never hurts.

The Marchment deal is just the start of what could be a wild summer across the NHL. With the salary cap finally rising, contending teams will be scrambling to shed contracts, and bad or middling clubs—like Seattle—will be in prime position to scoop up real talent at a discount.

There will undoubtedly be some salary cheese taking place along the way. Cap space is king right now, and the Stars are playing the long game to keep their window open and bring the band back together.
