I don’t know where to start this one, other than by starting here. Trading Jason Robertson is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard, and it can’t be viewed as a real consideration. There’s an easy solution to free up necessary cap space this Summer, and it starts with dumping Mason Marchment.
The Rangers were able to dump Jacob Trouba‘s money, and are about to do it again soon with Chris Kreider. Marchment is due $4.5 million in what is the final year of his contract heading into the 2025-26 NHL Season. Dallas has about $5 million in cap space already. That move gets them to $9.5 with real damage to get stuff done.
We saw this play out in the playoffs. Marchment is too much of a knucklehead to be part of this championship team. While his grit is appreciated, we’re talking about a guy who has spent 187 minutes in the penalty box during the last three regular seasons with Dallas. It just can’t happen anymore if the Stars want to get to the next step.
I broke it all down in a video. Make sure to check that on YouTube here.
This really isn’t hard. Jamie Benn, Matt Duchene, and Mikael Granlund are the only guys you have to worry about bringing back. What are we panicking about cap space for? Dare them to sign with the Sharks. You have no state tax on your side. Dump the right guys this offseason, and everything takes care of itself.
