The Spurs Should Trade For Zion Williamson

The Spurs Should Trade For Zion Williamson

I think Dyson Daniels said it best. The Pelicans basketball franchise is cursed. Not that I’m making excuses for Zion Williamson. The former Duke product obviously hasn’t held up his end of the bargain from a health and conditioning standpoint. Then again, putting a fat guy in New Orleans is a recipe for disaster.

The Pelicans suck and it feels like only a matter of time before Zion is traded elsewhere. Maybe it won’t happen during the deadline this year but a move this upcoming offseason feels inevitable. If and when the Zion trade goes down, the Spurs should jump in and make sure they’re the team that lands him. San Antonio makes by far the most sense for Zion.

What Zion needs more than anything is proper leadership and a team that has a player that’s better than him. San Antonio checks both of those boxes. He might have to stay away from the large sodas that Chickster orders but otherwise, the Spurs are the best fit.

Zion needs a culture and a team with an alpha that can get him in line. With the Spurs, Zion doesn’t have to save the franchise. He just needs to be a piece to uplift them back into contention. The NBA nowadays lacks a ton of accountability but the Spurs are about the best chance to possibly bring that to the table. Coach Pop is as respected as it gets and they have former legends like Tim Duncan who can help mold Zion into the player he should become.

Plus, the Spurs are sort of out of the spotlight. They’re not a big market with a ton of media snooping around. The last thing we need is Zion to land with a place that has a toxic culture in a big market – AKA the 76ers.

Oh, and the on-court element with Victor Wembanyama sure feels like it works. Wemby is a freak who can stretch the floor and protect the rim. The sharpshooter in Devin Vassell is already on the roster. Stephon Castle has shown great signs as a rookie too. What if we got freight train Zion mixed in there? Win the Cooper Flagg race? Add in a point guard like maybe a De’Aaron Fox? Now we’re off to the races!

The Spurs are the one team that makes everyone nervous if they get Zion. If they can get his ass in gear… uh oh. It’s a risk worth taking for San Antonio.
