Victor Wembanyama has been with the San Antonio Spurs organization for less than a week but has already been taken under the wings of San Antonio royalty. Wembanyama met with Spurs legends Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Manu Ginobili, and Sean Elliott for advice and guidance as he begins his NBA career.
“Probably in a couple hours, I learned more about the NBA than my whole life before that,” Wembanyama told reporters during his introductory press conference. “It’s so comforting to see these people who are so important to the city of San Antonio and the franchise are such great people and generous.
“They genuinely wanted to share their experience. I feel like they’ve already started to take great care of me. It’s so important to be in a position where it’s so comfortable.”

Wembanyama joins Robinson and Duncan as the only No. 1 overall draft picks in the franchise’s history. Behind Robinson, Duncan and one of the greatest cores ever, the Spurs were perennially a contender for over two decades. The team made the playoffs for 22 consecutive seasons and captured five championships.
Since then, the Spurs have experienced a significant fall from grace. Since their playoff streak was snapped, they’ve had four straight losing seasons. In the 2022-23 season, the Spurs recorded a 22-60 record, their worst finish since 1996-97, the season that granted them the No. 1 pick to land Duncan.
The Spurs hope the French Phenom can return them to relevancy and the championship conversation. Expectations are high, but Spurs brass is confident he can reach those lofty goals with his skills and his maturity.
“We’re excited to grow with you, support you, challenge you – especially coach (Popovich) – on your journey through life and basketball,” said Spurs general manager Brian Wright on Wembanyama. “Your talent is obvious. But as we got to know you, the maturity, the approach, the character, it let us know how special of a young man you are.”
