The Sphere Should Be The Permanent Home For The NHL Draft

The Sphere in Las Vegas hosted the 2024 NHL Draft. I didn’t attend the event but I did watch it on TV. All I can say is nobody cares about this draft. The coolest thing about it was the fact that it was in the Sphere and it should remain that way every single year for the foreseeable future.

I get that they want to give every team in the league a chance to host different events. I’m not going to argue that point. All I will say is the NFL Draft was at it’s best at New York City Radio Music Hall. There was an ambiance about it. Just had a certain vibe to it that you can’t explain.

Now it’s just held outside in large venues in random cities while people stand around in lines where they can’t see anything. The NFL also can’t go back because so many people go it would be silly to hold it in the Music Hall anymore. All of the teams are virtual too so on TV all you see is different War Rooms of grown men hugging each other over blown picks that will eventually get them fired.

The Sphere was easily the coolest part about the draft. Michael Buffer and Celine Dion made appearances. Every team is there in the building. Nobody knows who the hell these prospects are but they’re all there in person. It just had a vibe to it. Honestly, its scenery was the only reason why I kept it on TV because the actual ESPN broadcast was brutal to listen to.

Will the UFC host the first combat sports event in the Las Vegas Sphere?

Gary Bettman can do whatever he wants but if he’s smart he makes the Sphere the permanent home and vetoes any attempt to make this draft virtual. Going down that road will only make this event totally unwatchable after the first five picks.
