South Alabama QB Gio Lopez Has Committed To North Carolina

Gio Lopez is an amazing pickup in the transfer portal for the Tar Heels. He had a breakout year last season for South Alabama, and Lopez still has three years of eligibility. Now, the quarterback will take a big jump up in competition as he joins the ACC.

Lopez is not the most highly touted transfer, as he was the 31st-ranked transfer QB according to 247Sports.com. However, with the main portal window closed, he was one of the best remaining quarterbacks in the spring transfer window. Lopez will have the chance to generate genuine draft buzz if he can perform well in North Carolina.

Gio Lopez is a 6’0” 220-pound dual-threat quarterback. He finished the 2024 season with 2,559 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Also, he ended with 465 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

Lopez carried the South Alabama offense all year but could only lead the team to a 6-5 record. He will now try to take that starting experience and use it to win the job in a crowded UNC quarterback room.

I think he is a quarterback who can be successful at the Power Conference level. Furthermore, with three years of eligibility remaining, it is not the end of the world if he does not win the job outright. It will be interesting to see how North Carolina does next season with first-year head coach Bill Belichick

Belichick is the second-winningest coach in NFL history, and he is an eight-time Super Bowl Champion. However, college football might be a whole different game, and it would be weird to see Belichick struggle. North Carolina has gotten some highly hyped high school prospects and collegiate transfers during the offseason. Also, the ACC is not the scariest major conference, so being competitive next year is a real possibility. Ultimately, it will be interesting to see if Gio Lopez can win the starting job and lead the Tar Heels to a successful season next year.
