Chris Hummer of 247 Sports was the first to report the news here:
If you read my stock report notes, you know this move was a long time coming. Stone lost his job at SMU and Kevin Jennings took over fairly quickly during this past season. Something I noted early in the season. Stone and Jennings were splitting reps early in the season before it became obvious that Jennings was just the significantly better player. Jennings also has multiple years of eligibility remaining and isn’t going anywhere.
With that said, this is a really good get for Northwestern. He has a ton of experience and getting a quarterback who can throw a forward pass is something this program really hasn’t had. Stone is far better than the likes of Mike White and Jack Lausch whom the Wildcats trotted out there a season ago. After a tough 4-8 season, Stone could possibly make Northwestern more of a pain in the rear end to play against in Big 10 play. Words can’t describe how big of an upgrade this is for Northwestern based on what they had to work with a season ago.
Stone, 6-foot-1, 219, has thrown for 4,030 yards, 35 touchdowns, and eight interceptions during his career at SMU. He also has 88 carries, 287 rushing yards, and 6 touchdowns as a runner. The Dallas native has one season of eligibility remaining but could possibly apply for another medical redshirt season based on his past injury history.
