Simone Fontecchio returns to Pistons on two-year deal

Simone Fontecchio has agreed to a two-year, $16 million deal to return to the Detroit Pistons, ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report Saturday.

Fontecchio, 28, was acquired by the Pistons from the Utah Jazz ahead of the 2024 NBA Trade Deadline in exchange for a 2024 second-rounder, which ultimately became Kyle Filipowski (No. 32 overall).

The Pistons have been actively adding capable shooters this offseason with Tim Hardaway Jr., Tobias Harris and Malik Beasley all getting added. Fontecchio is, unquestionably, one of the team’s best, however. He averaged 10.5 points and 3.7 rebounds on 46.0 percent shooting, 40.1 percent from 3-point range (60.9 3PAr) and 81.8 percent from the free-throw line last year.

In just 16 games with Detroit, he posted 15.4 points on 42.6 percent shooting from distance (6.3 attempts; 53.2 3PAr). Every NBA team could use a Fontecchio, who’s a capable rebounder and a knock-down shooter with a high release point. I would take him on my team at any point.

This has been a rock-solid first offseason for Pistons new president Trajan Langdon, all things considered. This team isn’t anywhere near contention, but the roster should make life a lot easier for Cade Cunningham while maintaining plenty of flexibility for the future. It’s smart business, especially if you’re able to parlay them for more at the deadline or next offseason.

For now, I’m willing to wager that Detroit doesn’t have the worst season in franchise history next year … knock on wood if you said that at this point last year too.
