Will Wade is one of the youngest coaches in D1 College Basketball right now. He has been mildly successful thus far. He’s having a great year with the McNeese Cowboys in the Southland Conference. However, in the 2018-2019 season. Wade was suspended by LSU after an FBI Wiretap was released in the NCAA corruption trial. He also got hit with a 10-game suspension at the start of the season. It did not matter though record-wise for McNeese as they finished the season 30-3 and were the regular season champions and won the Southland Conference championship.
This is his first season back to coaching after not coaching for 2 years due to this situation. But the question remains: Should Will Wade get another chance at a Power Conference gig? I mean basketball-wise, the guy is obviously talented. He did well at LSU to make the NCAA Tournament every year except his first year there. In that same season of his controversial year of 2018-2019, LSU were regular season champs and went to the Sweet 16. Now, after a 2-year long hiatus, McNeese is dancing for the first time since 2002 and this is only their third time making the NCAA Tournament. The guy can coach.
I think it’s a matter of when not if when Will Wade is back at a Power Conference. I think the reputation is too fragile because of Will Wade at LSU despite how good of a coach he actually is. Plus, as mentioned, he’s still super young, he still has time. I don’t think he will get a look this year back to the Power Conference team, however, I wouldn’t be surprised if a team was desperate enough for a good coach that they at least inquire about it. I think if Will Wade can still make appearances as a Mid-Major, he’ll have his shot again soon enough.
