Does anyone believe in Virginia anymore? Does anyone actually believe in the ACC anymore? Virginia was the #3 seed in the ACC conference and they just lost to Colorado State in the First Four of the 2024 NCAAT…badly. It was so bad that Virginia only had 14 points at the half. They only scored 42 points total. As mentioned, they were the #3 seed in the ACC and they lost to the SEVENTH seed in the Mountain West Conference. Granted the MWC is a competitive and frankly good conference, but the criticism wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t lose in such an embarrassing way. The question is: Should Tony Bennett be fired? I was mad that Virginia even got in: Check below
No coach should be fired just on one loss alone, but other than a Championship in 2019, Tony Bennett and the Virginia Cavaliers have been very lackluster. Sure, since their championship in 2019, they have been conference champs of the ACC 2 times out of the last 5 years. Just for them to not make it out of the first round the 4 years they have made the NCAA Tournament since 2019. Of course, there was that egregious 2018 loss as a 1 seed to a 16 seed in the NCAAT. In fact, I would go as far as to say that Tony Bennett would have been fired already if he hadn’t won the NCAAT in 2019 (I know it’s a big deal but I’m just saying).
If Tony Bennett was coaching a Mid-Major, his job security would not be questioned, making it to the Big Dance as a Mid-Major is often enough to stay the coach. But Tony Bennett coaches Virginia, in the ACC, one of the most esteemed conferences in the nation. How often can we be satisfied with conference championships and first round exits in the NCAAT? For a coach that is held in high regard, there isn’t a lot to show for it.
I would consider moving off Tony Bennett. The lack of offense for each of Tony Bennett’s teams has been painful to watch year after year. Virginia shouldn’t have made the March Madness tournament regardless this year but they did somehow. The Selection Committee messed up horribly there. How long is Tony Bennett’s leash, that is the real question. If Virginia is happy with just making the tournament, good for them, but if they want to go farther than the first round, they should at least be weighing their options.
