Mike McDaniel doesn’t want to talk about it (rightfully so) but we sure can. Dalvin Cook is set to hit the open market after the Vikings cut the former Florida State product today. The Dolphins seem like heavy favorites given the fact that Cook was born in Miami. Should the Dolphins actually sign the veteran running back?
The answer to that question should be a resounding yes. For starters, Cook is still a good player. Even coming off a career worst year, Cook still average 4.4 yards per carry. Cook has never had a season below that mark. Given the creativity of Mike McDaniel using the Shanahan zone read rushing attack, I find it hard to believe Cook can’t continue to bring that type of efficiency to the table. That’s without mentioning how big of a threat he is in the screen game. Something that should take more pressure off Tua Tagovailoa.
The running back room in Miami isn’t terrible but it’s also filled with question marks. More so on the injury side. Raheem Mostert is almost never healthy and somehow was last year. Ditto for Jeff Wilson. Is that really going to happen again? I’d bet no. Cook gives Miami a bonafide starter they can count on. Plus Cook has had his own injury history so having Mostert and Wilson be the backups sounds ideal.
The Dolphins did draft lightning rod Devon Achane in the third round but in a perfect world you don’t see much from him outside of maybe returning kicks and dialing up some home run balls. Cook is also a perfect mentor for him and you can’t really put a price tag on that. Achane is a perfect speed demon to deploy as the young version of Tony Pollard. I’m sure he can learn a thing or two from Cook.
Most of all, Cook should be motivated in Miami. Helping the Dolphins win big games is probably something he’s always dreamed of doing. When you add in that he’s going to share the field with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, this offense has a chance to be truly special. Miami absolutely should be interested in Cook and he feels like the missing piece to a true contender.
By the way, what’s the risk? Cook isn’t going to command a big contract like the one Minnesota gave him or they would have found a trade partner. Also, there is no state tax in Florida so Cook is going to pocket more of his earnings anyway.
