Alex Cora is heading into the final year of his contract. In normal circumstances, you probably shouldn’t worry about your manager outright leaving. Usually, if a manager leaves it’s because he’s been fired. Except we might be living in a new world with MLB managers.
Did anybody see the contract that Craig Counsell just got? Counsell has never won anything. Cora managed the best team in Red Sox history. Boston won 78 games a year ago and it may have been Cora’s best managing job. He quite literally won 78 games without a starting rotation. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that Cora is a blue chip manager.
If the Red Sox want to keep Cora, they better be willing to pay up. Not even that, now you start to ask the question of if Cora even wants to stay. There have already been reports out there that teams would be willing to offer Cora a pretty penny to manage their team. Not even that, you have to wonder how much longer he wants to manage this team.
What if the Red Sox blow it in free agency? What if it’s another year where Cora doesn’t have any pitching to work with? What if it’s another year where the Sox cheap out? Who are they paying right now?
Cora likely prefers to be in Boston, but this should be viewed as a legitimate concern. The Yamamoto sweepstakes may have lingering consequences here. Food for thought.
